Comerica Java & Jazz - Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 6:00 p.m.





First, come to the Main Library for the sounds of Marcus Belgrave at the Comerica Java & Jazz concert on the lawn. Then continue the journey with a lecture on the history of Jazz in Detroit presented by the E. Azalia Hackley Collection. But the road doesn’t end there, join us for a riveting discussion on the new book “American Cultural Rebels,” chronicling some of America’s greatest avant-garde artist. Finally, wet your appetite for the festival and experience a classic tribute performance by a new, dynamic next generation jazz ensemble that you don’t want to miss.

History of the Detroit Sound, Part I: The Jazz Age

The E. Azalia Hackley Collection is proud to present a lecture and exhibit that highlight Detroit’s unique contributions to the history of jazz. The lecture will focus on the music, the musicians and their popular jazz spots in the city. It also looks at the lasting influence that this music had in creating the Detroit sound.

America’s Cultural Rebels: Avant-garde and Bohemian Artists, Writers and Musicians from the 1850s through the 1960s; Roy Kotynek and John Cohassey, Co-authors

Retrace the path of the avant-garde, a European import, from its arrival in America to its emergence as a source of cultural rebellion. Discover Bohemia, offspring of romanticism, and how it served as an alternative way of life that persisted late into the 20th century, inspiring the 1960s countercultures that transformed America.

Detroit Chamber Jazz Ensemble: A Tribute to Donald Walden; Raphael Price - Director

After years of setting at the feet of Detroit’s jazz masters, Raphael Price has returned armed with a masters degree from UC Berkley, and ready to launch a new generation of jazz to the world. Price has assembled a mix of seasoned and eager young musicians to pay homage to Donald Walden, a mentor, teacher, and jazz master, respected around the world
